tracking child

If you’re a parent, you know there is a very fine line between protecting your children and invading their privacy. Kids need their own space to understand themselves, explore their strengths, and grow their own personalities. However, at the same time, there is a lot you don’t want to expose them to at a tender age.

Like any other parent, I use parental controls on my internet deal to keep my young children safe from explicit or violent content. However, once your kid gets a smartphone, a whole new scary world opens up, prompting the need for stronger measures.

Tracking Your Child’s Smartphone Secretly

Respecting your child’s privacy is very important for their growth and stability. But you know as a parent you can’t just let them do anything they want unsupervised. Why the more trusting among you may ask? The internet is a scary place. There are hackers, pedophiles, child pornographers, fraudsters, and all manner of cybercriminals out there. That means your kids can be potential victims of any number of crimes.

Cybercriminals may use their smartphones to obtain sensitive information, pose as children arranging to meet your child, share inappropriate content with your children, and many more horrific things. Luckily, for the responsible parent, these apps can help you keep track of your child’s smartphone without letting them know:

  1. Where’s My Droid
  2. Google Maps
  3. FamiSafe Location Tracker
  4. Glympse
  5. Find My Device
  6. Geo-Tracker
  7. Find My Friends

Let’s take a closer look at these apps and see how they can make your parenting job easier.

Where’s My Droid

Developed by Alienman Technologies, Where’s My Droid is one of the best tracking apps for Android devices. All you have to do is install it on your kid’s phone and it will allow you to track its location for free. The intuitive and simple design makes it very easy to locate a smartphone any time you want. You can even take pictures from the target device without your child knowing. The light and space-efficient app is available for all Android devices.

Google Maps

We all use Google Maps on a daily basis. But did you know you can use it to track your child’s smartphone as well? Using the location sharing function on your child’s device settings, you can use Google Maps to locate it. You can also view the target device’s location history, as well as track multiple devices simultaneously. Google Maps works for both Android and iOS devices.

FamiSafe Location Tracker

Designed for both iOS and Android devices, FamiSafe allows you to track any target device and offers several great features to make this easier. It displays the target device’s current live location. As long as the target device has a working internet connection, you can find its precise location. The basic version of the app is free but you can upgrade to the premium version for more tracking features. The app just requires you to install it on the target device. Once you do that, you can control it there from your own smartphone.

Glympse

When it comes to web-based location-tracking services, Glypmse is right up there with the best of them. The service allows you to track Windows, iOS, and Android devices with ease. It can instantly locate the target device and notify you of the device’s whereabouts. You can even use Glympse to share locations in an emergency.

Find My Device

Find My Device is an Android app from Google to help people locate lost or stolen smartphones. However, it also doubles as an app that allows you to track a target device’s location. Once you install it on your child’s smartphone, you can remotely monitor its location, without having to pay a cent. A few simple on-screen steps show you exactly how to track the device’s current location, as well as make it ring or even remotely wipe it.

Geo-Tracker

This is another Android-only app built to help people track device locations. The app is free to use and all you have to do is download and set it up in your kid’s phone. The app allows you to share your own location and GPS history as well. The app goes a step ahead by letting you monitor what speed the target device moves at. So you can always make sure your kids aren’t speeding or driving dangerously.

Find My Friends

I first heard of Find My Friends when it came up in a discussion about child safety with my neighbor while looking for child-friendly options on the Cox channel guide. Developed by Apple, the sleek and easy-to-use app allows you to track your friends or family at any time. The app is heavily secure and allows you to quickly locate target devices. The only downside is that it specifically works on iOS devices, and the target device needs to be an iOS device as well.
