s1000d viewer

S1000D can be defined as an international specification for the procurement as well as production of technical publications. It is an XML specification that can be used to prepare, manage, and publish technical details for a product. It was developed and launched by the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) for use with military aircraft. Its scope has been extended to include land, sea and non-equipment products. In addition to this, it can be used in civil as well as military products. S1000D is an important of the S-Series of ILS specifications.

S1000D viewer is maintained by the S1000D Steering Committee. It consists of board members from the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD), the United States’ Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), and the Air Transport Association (ATA), along with national industry as well as defence representatives from most of the countries presently using the specification.

The specification can be downloaded and use for free. Although, it is suggested that advice be sought on the best ways to implement an S1000D project. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It is many-sizes-fit-many solution; through a combination of business rules, selectable elements as well as customizable values the standard is tailored in order to fulfill the requirements of the project.

Principles of S1000D

S1000D needs information to be created as individual data items that is known as Data Modules (DM). It can be structured with XML elements as well as metadata. Data Modules are self-contained and can be used whenever that piece of information is required. They can be organized into a hierarchical XML structure via the use of Data Module Coding. This allows the updating of single data items without any important change in the path of XML structure which points to them.

The Data Modules as well as supporting contents, including graphics, publishing information, training packages, and more can be stored as well as maintained using a Common Source Database (CSDB). It contains all the components needed for a product’s Interactive Electronic Technical Publication that is all elements needed across the disciplines for the production of a suite of documentation for the operation as well as maintenance of the product. Next common term is Interactive Electronic Technical Manual that can be considered as an individual manual that is part of the IETP. Due to the flexibility of XML, they can range from a printed manual, through to a fully interactive digital manual along with rich media, learning opportunities as well as several formats of delivery.

Top Benefits

S1000D has several benefits, across various areas of businesses. Let’s take a look here:

  1. Data Planning and Management
  2. Interoperability at data level via use of accepted industry schemas
  3. Data Dictionary is available at free of cost in the specification
  4. It is based on International Standard ISO 8879 (SGML/XML content)
  5. Easy data exchange
  6. Common details can be identified
  7. Can be connected with source data, including Logistics Support Analysis Requirements that can be used to improve an integrated data environment
  8. The specification allows the addition of extra documentation features, including Link mechanisms that allow the project team to make a decision what level of end user experience is needed.
  9. The level of data module allows for the focus to be on data, as opposed to a more traditional paper delivery.
